ABOUT THIS PRINT:

Chang'E is the "moon goddess" in Chinese mythology, celebrated during the Chinese new year in mid-autumn. She was married to a heroic archer. He had been rewarded by the gods with an elixir for immortality, which he planned to share with his beloved wife. Chang'E was guarding the elixir when an evil apprentice of the archer, greedy for power, attempted to steal it. Before he could, Chang'E swallowed the potion herself, and was rocketed to the moon, destined to live alone, for eternity. Versions of the story mention a rabbit as her only companion... and I imagined that rabbit monstrous in size...

It is said that Chang'E is able to gaze down longingly at her loved ones on earth, while never being able to physically join them. In an abstract way, this mirrors how we engage with the world today ~ through the screens of our gadgets ~while experiencing community in real physical space less and less...

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

"Her Infinite Jest" was part of an exhibition that was called "The Old Gods of New Berlin". I created 5 pieces to go with the lyrics of 5 songs about 5 strange myths that still resonate in a modern world. The songs were created by Johnny Hollow.

THIS PIECE COMES WITH:

1) a signed copy of "The Old Gods of New Berlin" Art Book & CD

2) a certificate of authenticity
3) a glow in the dark enamel pin of the monstrous rabbit
4) a poster of the original event for "The Old Gods of New Berlin"

This is what the book looks like:

The Lyrics (written by yours truly):

Every human has a home
I used to have one
Every human has a love
I used to be one
Those memories are cherished
Until they’re all gone
Their choices are their own
Until they have none

I used to be human…

(I am just a passenger Ascending into lunacy)

I am the night!
My arms can pull the ocean wide!
And my hands tug at the marrow!
Of every living thing!
I am the night, I am the tide I am the light of the moon!
I spiral as the night begins to bloom!

I used to be human...
