JINN (genies) are supernatural creatures in Arabic mythology. Jinn is derived from the semitic root "jinn" meaning "to hide or conceal". These shape-shifting spirits are made of fire or air, and can embody both human and god-like characteristics, and thus can mix and even mate with humans. They are known to be seductive, and can be helpers, tricksters, or demons. In early Arabia they were thought to inspire poets and soothsayers. Some say they are hunted by angels and wolves, who can see them when others cannot.
This piece holds my appreciation for how these creatures were hunted in various tales... and survived. As a gay man growing up in 80's and 90's I imagined a kind of kinship with the Jinn as I eventually got the nerve to come out later on in life. What better creature to inspire queer courage than a powerful flaming spirit?
This project merges my visual work as "My Pet Skeleton" with my musical collaboration with "Johnny Hollow". It culminated in a cd package that contains 5 paintings with 5 songs based on 5 strange tales. Each print comes with a signed copy of "The Old Gods of New Berlin" CD/Book that was painstakingly designed and formatted by yours truly. (see flip through video below)
Each print is signed and numbered by yours truly and is created with archival pigment inks on fine heavyweight, museum quality paper.
Each piece will be carefully packed inside an acid free sleeve and fully protected by a VERY thick craft tube.
